First hours
Returning to the Path
First hours on the Path.
Start Remastered with a short setup, not a spoiler walkthrough. Choose a difficulty, review Accessibility including Bard's Ballad if you want a lighter load, check the graphics preset against the PC table, and create a manual save before you wander. Tutorials are streamlined in this build. Loot can be grouped, shown in a feed, and picked up without dismounting Roach. Returning saves reset skills and settings so you can re-spend the new tree before you leave the first region.

First hours on the Path
Do these four things before you ride out. They do not name quests or story beats. Tick them here if you want a local reminder; the game does not read this list. Difficulty and Bard's Ballad are explained on their own page. Graphics presets belong to the six official PC profiles. A manual save is the one action CDPR cannot undo for you if a later setting change feels wrong. On PC, match a column first so the graphics tick is not a guess. On a console, pick the named mode, then the same four rows. Returning players should treat the skill reset as part of that first hour even though the respec itself lives on the combat page. New players should leave tutorials on while these four rows are still open. Roach, loot grouping, and the streamlined tutorials all wait until these four rows are ticked; skip them and you will redo graphics or difficulty after the first village.
New game, imported save, or a revert
A new game is the cleanest way to meet streamlined tutorials and the three-rank skill tree. You pick difficulty up front, land in the opening region with the new camera and loot rules, and spend points on the prerequisite tree from zero. That is the default if you have never finished the 2015 campaign or the 2022 next-gen patch.
An imported save should load. CDPR says current Witcher 3 saves should work in Remastered, achievements and trophies stay unlocked, and skills and settings reset so you can reallocate immediately. Do that respec before you take a contract that assumes your old build. The tree is not the 2015 spend-N-points board; ranks and prerequisites changed, and some skills were renamed.
You can still revert to 1.32 Classic and, after Remastered, to 4.04. Use that only if a specific executable is required for a community mod. Remastered's official mod path is the in-game mod.io browser. Third-party packs from an older build are not given a compatibility matrix in CDPR's notes, so treat them as unpublished until the author says otherwise. Cross Progression remains functional after the expansion merge.
Quality-of-life and common mistakes
Loot grouping, a loot feed, and picking items up without leaving the saddle are in the Remastered notes. Turn grouping on if the inventory feels noisy in the first villages. Leave tutorials on for a new game; they were streamlined rather than removed. Horse control has a new sensitivity slider under Settings → Controls if Roach feels twitchy after the upgrade.
A common mistake is treating Remastered as the 2022 next-gen patch with a new subtitle. The skill tree reset, Path Tracing, mod.io, and Bard's Ballad are 2026 changes. Another mistake is skipping a manual save, then stacking graphics experiments on an autosave. A third is starting Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine from the main menu before you understand they are included expansions you can still launch standalone — the play order is still base Path, then Hearts of Stone, then Blood and Wine.
Do not hunt a White Orchard step list here. CDPR did not publish one. Stay on difficulty, accessibility, graphics, tutorials, loot, and the skill reset. Late-game quests and endings stay off this setup list. When the four checklist rows are done, open Skills and combat to rebuild the tree, or Expansions if you already know the base Path.

A first-session order that stays spoiler-light
On PC, install the latest GPU drivers, pick the official profile that matches the hardware, then boot. On PlayStation 5, choose Ray Tracing Mode or Performance Mode before you care about hair or shadows. On Switch 2, complete the motion-control tutorial if you plan to use those playstyles. Then hit the four checklist rows.
If you imported a save, open the character panel and spend the reset tree before you fast travel. If you started new, keep the sword you are given, sell junk once grouping is on, and do not dump ability points into a meme screenshot build from 2016 — the ranks and synergies were rebalanced. Equipment can later be reforged at Yoana and Hattori to change appearance without changing stats; that is not a first-hour task.
Create the manual save in a quiet spot after the graphics preset is stable. Name it so you can find it if Path Tracing or Bard's Ballad feels wrong two hours later. Then play. This page's job ends when the session is set up. Combat camera, disengage, and monster polish are on Skills and combat. Old save mechanics are on Saves and mods.
Frequently asked questions
Should I start a new game for Remastered?
A new game is the cleanest way to meet streamlined tutorials and the three-rank tree from zero. An old save should still load: achievements stay, skills and settings reset, and you respec before the next fight. Pick new if you have never finished the campaign. Pick the save if you are mid-Path and only wanted the 2026 upgrade.
What should I do in the first hour besides the checklist?
On PC, install current GPU drivers and pick the official profile that matches the hardware. Keep tutorials on. Turn loot grouping on if the inventory is noisy. Do not start Hearts of Stone from the menu until you understand it is an included expansion that still plays after the base Path. Make the manual save after graphics are stable.
Will this page spoil White Orchard?
No. CDPR did not publish a White Orchard step list. The first hours stay on difficulty, accessibility, graphics, tutorials, loot grouping, and the skill reset. Story beats, late-game quests and endings are out of scope here on purpose.
