Saves and mods
Saves should work
saves should work
Move an old save and see official mod.io support.
CDPR says current Witcher 3 saves should work in Remastered. Achievements and trophies are shared with current versions and do not need to be unlocked again. Skills and settings will be reset; you can reallocate immediately. Cross Progression remains functional after the expansion merge. Official mod support is the in-game Cross Platform Mod Support powered by mod.io. A full third-party compatibility list for every Nexus pack has not been published.
Bring an old save into Remastered
If you have a save from the 2015 original or the 2022 next-gen / 4.xx Complete Edition patch, CDPR's support FAQ says it should load in Remastered. That is the official line: saves should work. Do not delete the old folder first. Let the upgrade run, then boot and look for the save in the load list. If a save is missing, the support article is the place to start, not a random file-move guide.
Achievements stay. Steam lists 78 achievements for app 292030; you do not replay them for Remastered if they were already unlocked on this appid. Trophies on PlayStation follow the same shared rule in the FAQ. The thing that does not stay is your spent build. Skills and settings will be reset. Open the tree after load and spend again. The new tree uses three ranks and prerequisites, so an old screenshot of your 2016 layout will not map 1:1.
Create a manual save immediately after the respec, same as the First hours checklist. Autosaves from an older build can still be there; a new manual save marks the Remastered session. If you want the 2022 executable back, CDPR still documents a revert to 4.04, and Classic 1.32 remains available. Reverting is how you get an older mod loader, not how you keep Remastered features.
Cross Progression and platform saves
The expansion-inclusion FAQ says save files remain compatible and Cross Progression remains functional after Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine merged into the base game. If you already used Cross Progression between PC and a console, that path is still the official one. Xbox Play Anywhere is a Remastered addition for Series players; it is not a silent replacement for every other platform pair.
Nintendo Switch 2 is a new storefront. Switch 1 owners claim the Switch 2 version. CDPR has not published a special-case essay that lists every cloud-save edge between Switch 1, Switch 2, GOG and Steam. What is published is: Remastered is the same Path, Cross Progression remains functional, and Play Anywhere is in the feature list for Xbox. Unnamed platform pairs stay unpublished; use Cross Progression or Play Anywhere only where CDPR named them.
Advice: finish the upgrade on the platform where the save already lives, confirm the load, respec, then use the official Cross Progression or Play Anywhere flow if you need another box. Raw save-file copies between storefronts are not in the support FAQ.
Official mod.io, and what is not published
Remastered adds in-game Cross Platform Mod Support powered by mod.io. That is the official browser. It is the feature CDPR named in the what's-new article. Use it if you want mods that the publisher wired into this build. Remastered notes do not include a REDkit tutorial.
Community packs from Nexus and similar sites are not covered by a first-party compatibility matrix in CDPR support articles. The skill-tree change is enough on its own to break older scripts that rewrite abilities. Graphics, DirectX 12, and Path Tracing can break rendering mods. CDPR has not listed which popular packs survive. Unofficial mods may fail; no test grid is published.
If a mod only works on 1.32 or 4.04, revert using the documented Classic / 4.04 path, then accept that you are not on Remastered while that pack is loaded. Mixing a 2015 script folder with the 2026 executable is the usual way people lose a save. Keep a manual Remastered save that never had third-party scripts, then experiment on a copy. Official Cross Platform Mod Support is the in-game browser; anything else is unpublished for this build until CDPR or the mod author says it survives the skill-tree change.

Frequently asked questions
Will my 2015 or 2022 save load?
CDPR says current Witcher 3 saves should work in Remastered. Achievements stay. Skills and settings reset, and you can reallocate immediately. Keep the old save folder until you have loaded, respecced, and written a new manual save. If a save is missing after the upgrade, use the official support article rather than a file-copy workaround.
Do I have to unlock 78 Steam achievements again?
No. Steam lists 78 achievements for app 292030, and the Remastered save FAQ says achievements and trophies are shared with current versions. You do not replay them for the 2026 build on the same appid. The reset applies to skills and settings, not to the achievement set.
Will my Nexus mods work?
CDPR has not published a pack-by-pack compatibility matrix. Official support is the in-game mod.io browser. The new skill tree, DirectX 12 and Path Tracing can break older scripts. If a pack only works on 1.32 or 4.04, revert using the documented Classic / 4.04 path and accept that you are not on Remastered while it is loaded.
